Hollywood has produced plenty of films about underdogs rising to claim the limelight.

Now Los Angeles is experiencing its own real-life Cinderella story, as the area’s technology scene has been transformed from backwater to boomtown in just a few years. Hordes of venture capitalists from northern California, once long dismissive of their southern neighbor, now regularly commute in search of deals in a less heavily hunted spot than the Bay Area. In 2016 the city’s startups received around $3 billion in funding.

Home to over 500 tech startups in beachside and nearby communities of Venice, Culver City, and Playa Vista, the Westside of Los Angeles has earned the attractive new title of Silicon Beach . . . . . and that isn’t a reference to body parts made of silicon.

Having already influenced the entire marketplace of the region, Silicon Beach is bracing itself for a tech boom that has and will continue to completely transform the Westside.

"Silicon Beach", as it's being called, is attracting talent and funding for tech startups, entrepreneurs drawn to L.A.'s ability to brand and sell ideas...plus the weather.

Silicon Beach is the Westside region of the Los Angeles metropolitan area that is home to over 500 tech startup companies. Major technology companies have opened offices in the region including Google, Yahoo!, YouTube, BuzzFeed, Facebook, Salesforce, AOL, Electronic Arts, Dollar Shave Club EdgeCast Networks, and MySpace. The region is considered the second- or third-largest tech hub in the world.   But what makes Silicon Beach distinct from Silicon Valley is the confluence of hi-technology and the entertainment industry.

This is a place where people have come for years to make dreams happen, so why shouldn't they come here to make their technology dreams happen?   With the entertainment industry,  there is a “dreamer” mentality with the legions of actors, directors and writers that come  to “make it”.  Many don’t so there is more of a permission to fail than in the less forgiving Bay Area.
